He is Principal Trumpet of the Basel Symphony Orchestra, a founding member of the renowned London-based brass ensemble Septura, and a professor at the Lucerne School of Music. Huw maintains an active concert schedule featuring both recitals and solo performances. As a soloist, he has performed with distinguished orchestras such as the Northern Sinfonia, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Irish Chamber Orchestra, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, Hamburger Camerata, and the Helsinki Philharmonic, working with conductors including Yan Pascal Tortelier, Philippe Herreweghe, and Thomas Zehetmair. Huw has also premiered works by Leif Segerstam, Paul Max Edlin, Karl Jenkins, David Philip Hefti, and Jonathan Harvey. Among his more than fifty available recordings (on labels such as EMI, Decca, and Chandos), he can be heard as the solo trumpeter on the soundtrack of the BAFTA-nominated film Me and Orson Welles. The first two albums in his groundbreaking series for Naxos Records, The Art of the Modern Trumpet, have garnered international acclaim, with reviews describing them as a "sensational debut" and "exquisitely interpreted," and praising his "pure tone, absolute control, and a sense of effortless mastery." Huw secured his first position as principal trumpet at the age of just 24 with the Scottish Opera orchestra. For many years, Huw has regularly performed as a guest principal trumpet with various orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and the Nash Ensemble. He also gives masterclasses across Europe, North America, and Asia. Huw Morgan was born in South Wales (UK) and studied initially at Chetham’s School of Music under John Dickinson and Murray Greig, later at the Royal Academy of Music in London with James Watson, Mark David, and Robert Farley, and finally at the Zurich University of the Arts with Frits Damrow; he completed his studies at all these institutions with distinction.
