Peace, Perfect Peace 2019

This devotional setting was written for use at a festival of music featuring the International Staff Band and the Melbourne Staff Band, held at the Robert Blackwood Hall in Melbourne, Australia, in November 2015.

The music is based on an Erik Leidzén song that was included in The Salvation Army 1986 Song Book (no. 751). Also introduced is the well-known hymn Abide with me (S.A.S.B. 529) by Henry Francis Lyte. Both of these melodies share a similar wistful, 'falling' sequence which is also employed as an introduction and appears elsewhere throughout the music.

In keeping with the mood of both songs, this setting is gentle and reflective. A quiet, restful ending suggests the far-distant knolling of a church bell. It will be important to ensure that this gentle percussive effect is sensitively achieved.
