Postcards from Tomorrow 2026

Amended Version of the Original for Wind Orchestra.
Winner of the "La Bacchetta d'Oro" International Composision Contesz 2021
Set Test Piece at the Swiss National Brass Band Championship 2026 (4th Section)

Postcards from Tomorrow emerged from a simple image: children who hand over a box containing drawings and messages about their hopes for the future. This tradition gives rise to a follow-up question:
What wishes do we have for tomorrow, and what messages would we like to leave for future generations?

The work consists of three interconnected movements (attacca), which are conceived as postcards from the future.

I. Abonded Blockhouses
The opening movement explores the scars of history. Like abandoned bunkers, the traces of human violence remain for a long time. Unstable motifs give rise to an Earth-themed movement, which gradually transforms into a kind of outcry. The music penetrates the brutality of war before rising into a form of inspiration. It expresses an ambivalent plea between justice and redemption.

II. Pagoda at the Lake
As a place of remembrance and contemplation, the pagoda becomes a symbol of returning to what is essential.
This tranquil and meditative movement is based on a reduced musical language and presents several solo voices in the foreground. The arch form (ABCBA) reflects balance and harmony.

III. Building Bridges
The final movement opens up a space of hope. After the confrontation with the past, the final sentence calls for connection, bringing people together and shaping the future.
A rhythmic ostinato serves as a musical bridge between the sections, forming a rondo that connects memories with an emerging future. The music gradually builds in intensity toward a radiant conclusion.
