The Spirit
"The Spirit" by Magnus Hylander was written for the Gnosjö Brassband. In this work, the composer has, with varying rhythms and nuances, woven in two hymns that have come to mean a lot to this particular band. The first is "God our God we praise you" - which is a Swedish interpretation of the very old hymn "Te Deum", which was set to music in 1771 by Ignaz Franz. The second hymn "I lift up my hands" is based on Psalm 121 and has been translated and set to music in several different versions over the years, such as by Jakob Arrhenius and Jesper Swedberg in 1694. However, the essence of the hymn is the same in that it expresses trust in God as guardian and protector.
