Derbyshire, Warwickshire, Leicestershire, and Staffordshire were originally created as subdivisions of the Kingdom of Mercia in the 10th century.

In modern times its boundary has remained relatively static. An exclave of Derbyshire surrounding Donisthorpe and Measham was transferred to Leicestershire in 1888. The strip between this exclave and the county boundary (containing Overseal and Netherseal) was transferred to Derbyshire in 1897. In 1934, areas around Dore, Norton, and Tolley were transferred to the City of Sheffield in modern South Yorkshire.
