The modern-day Dumfries & Galloway council area is the same in territory as the Dumfries & Galloway region that existed from 16th May 1975 to 1st April 1996. The region was an amalgamation of the historic counties of Dumfriesshire, Kirkcudbrightshire, and Wigtownshire.
